Distilling Rye Whiskey and Bourbon in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has long been known as a destination for the distilling of rye whiskey. The origins of American distilling can be traced back to 1753 when Bomberger’s Distillery opened as the nation’s first distillery - transforming distilling from an agricultural enterprise to a large-scale industry. Lancaster County, with it’s countryside filled with rye fields and dotted with distilleries, has become a hotbed for innovation in the distilling of rye. No distiller better captures the style of the region more than Dick Stoll, the last master distiller at the former Pennsylvania landmark Michter’s Distillery. He received his training from Charles Everett Beam, grandnephew of the legendary Jim Beam himself. Alongside the famous sour mash of Michter’s, Dick Stoll also created legendary ryes - including a 20 Year Rye from Wild Turkey for the Japanese Market. Michter’s closed it’s doors in 1990, however, today Dick Stoll’s legacy lives on in local Lancaster distillery: Stoll & Wolfe. Each batch of Stoll & Wolfe whiskey honors the legacy of both Dick Stoll and the history of Pennsylvania whiskey. We are proud to have our bottle bear both of our names.
